Cyber ​​Security Laws Introduced by Government of India

 

Realizing the dire need for reinforcement of the country’s cybersecurity framework, the Indian government has introduced several laws and initiatives to prevent and counter the rising rate of cybercrimes. Some of these include:

Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008

The IT Amendment Act is a piece of legislation enacted in 2008. It regulates cyber crimes in India, defines penalties for them and provides a framework for cyber security in the country. The passage of this law gave CERT-In the authority to enforce it. The IT Act provides the essential framework for cyber security in India, which will guide the National Cyber ​​Security Policy, all policies to develop a robust cyber security strategy in India.

National Cyber ​​Security Policy 2013

The National Cyber ​​Security Council of India is one of the most influential bodies when it comes to cyber security, working with the central and state governments to ensure that public safety and national security are ensured. The competent authority under NCCI is the Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT. Since the implementation of the National Cyber ​​Security Policy in 2013, the country has seen an exponential increase in cyber attacks and related security issues. This policy was created to protect citizens from the threats posed by hackers and other cybercriminals in a way that ensures resilience and security for both the government and the private sector. DeitY is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy, which includes the protection of critical infrastructure such as banks, telecommunication networks, etc., as well as the protection of personal data.

Personal Data Protection Bill

The Personal Data Protection Bill, introduced in Parliament in 2019 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is a step towards privacy in India. The bill proposes the establishment of a Data Protection Authority of India to develop and monitor policies to control privacy rights as well as prevent information leakage in the digital economy.

Cyber ​​Jagrukta Divas

The Cyber ​​Jagrukta Divas initiative was launched in March 2022 by the Ministry of Home Affairs to increase cyber security awareness among government departments. The MHA has directed all government agencies to come up with an annual action plan that includes an awareness campaign for the people as the most resilient line of defense against cyber attacks. The initiative is based on the fact that cybersecurity awareness training for employees is just as essential for an organization’s security as strengthening its technical defenses against cyber attacks.
