Future of Cybersecurity in India

India is turning into a digital hub with its technological advancements. In efforts to fight back against such attacks, the government of India has been implementing cyber security policies and initiatives that aim to protect its citizens from harm caused by cyber attacks.

Cybersecurity framework is a process through which policies, plans, and standards are developed to support secure cyberspace in the country. It involves the identification of all critical assets and systems, making security arrangements, and personal awareness about the different types of threats that can endanger any critical system.

What are the steps taken by the Government of India to spread awareness about cyber crimes?

Considering the rising number of cybercrimes in India, the government has established several measures and initiatives to combat cybercrime. The central government has also established a separate department that administers issues and guidelines related to cybersecurity.

Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is a scheme that resides under the purview of the Home Ministry to fight against cybercrime. I4C keeps an eye on various departments and organizations to carry out a collaborative effort to fulfill the following objectives:

  • Identifying research needs to address the cybersecurity problems and pave a path for R&D activities to incorporate modern technologies and forensic tools to present resolution measures in collaboration with academic and research institutions.

  • To make sure that Cyberspace isn’t misused for any kind of extremism and terrorism.

  • To analyze the ongoing programs and suggest amendments to strengthen cyber laws and adopt evolving technologies.

  • To administer international cooperation for implementing Mutual Legal Assistance Treaties (MLAT) to address the cybercrime cases in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Apart from the set objectives, the I4C scheme allows the Ministry of Home Affairs to coordinate and align the activities of the following organizations to strengthen cybersecurity in the country that are regarded as components of the I4C scheme.

  1. National Cybercrime Threat Analytics Unit (TAU)

  2. National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in)

  3. Platform for Joint Cybercrime Investigation Team

  4. National Cybercrime Forensic Laboratory National Cybercrime Forensic Laboratory Ecosystem

  5. National Cybercrime Training Centre (NCTC) (www.cytrain.ncrb.gov.in)

  6. Cybercrime Ecosystem Management Unit

  7. National Cyber Crime Research and Innovation Centre

Why should one government invest in cyber security?

Cyber space is a dynamic and complex environment of interactions amongst individuals, software and services. While the growing use of the internet has brought about unimaginable digital transformation and development, it has also led to an exponential increase in cybercrimes.

Internationally, it is common knowledge that cybercrimes have resulted in significant loss of business or state secrets. Moreover, most victims do not report cybercrime incidents simply due to the fact that they are unable to recover from their losses.

Cyber attacks are no longer a threat in the distant future. In fact, they have already become the norm. Due to its vulnerable and evolving cyber threat landscape, India has witnessed hundreds of big and small cyber attacks. Any organization that relies on real-time computation or possesses sensitive data serves as a potential target for cybercriminals. Realizing the growing problem, the Ministry of Home Affairs has launched the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) to strengthen the capabilities of Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and improve coordination among the LEAs and other agencies. The MHA also launched the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) to facilitate online reporting of cybercrime incidents."

Cyber Jagrookta Diwas

The Ministry of Home Affairs launched the Cyber Jagrookta Diwas initiative as an advisory for all the government PSUs, universities, schools, panchayat raj institutions, etc. The objective of this initiative is to raise cyber awareness among the employees of these institutions to prevent cyber attacks. The home ministry rolled out an advisory for all the above-mentioned organizations to develop an annual action plan and observe a cybersecurity campaign on the first Wednesday of every month. The motive of the Cyber Jagrookta Diwas initiative is to strengthen the human factor of the cybersecurity framework in government organizations. A cybersecurity company also carried out a Q&A session with the CISOs of PSUs.
